Madison had been hunting the same area for four years, but on the evening of August 15, a fresh setup and a little patience paid off in a big way.
“I knew he was big, but when I looked through the scope, I was like ‘Oh wow,’” Madison says. “That’s when I tried to stay calm.”
She was sitting in a new stand that overlooked a cotton field when she spotted movement. A nice buck stepped out first, and she admits she seriously considered pulling the trigger — but something told her to wait.
Not long after, a bigger buck appeared and began browsing at about 85 yards. Madison settled in behind her 7mm-08, took a deep breath, and squeezed the trigger.
“I saw him drop right there,” she says. “That’s when it really set in that I had just killed a wall hanger.”
It was a classic Lowcountry whitetail moment: hot summer air, velvet bucks in bachelor groups, and just enough light left to make it all happen.
Even though Madison didn’t have trail cam pics of this particular buck, she wasn’t totally shocked a big deer showed up. The spot she was hunting had produced in the past, and she and her dad had put in the time to scout and prepare the new stand location.
“My dad’s been hunting with me since I was five years old,” Madison says. “Every hunt we share together is a memory I’ll hold onto forever.”
That shared tradition made the night even more special — and one they won’t forget anytime soon.
As for advice to other hunters hoping for a moment like hers?
“Have patience and perseverance,” Madison says. “You never know when that big one’s gonna step out.”
